Prints

The prints shown in the "see works" pages that follow were made over a five year period from 2005 to the present and the great majority of work are monoprints, monotypes, and drypoint etchings. The subject matter spans all of the major themes found throughout my work, such as "Dreams", "Stories from Public and Private Myth", "People I've Known", etc .

Many of these prints were created at The Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk Connecticut, The Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont, and my studio in Connecticut. Monoprints are an edition of one print. From my perspective the are paintings on paper. The image is applied by painting, rolling, and scraping the surface of a copper or acrylic printing plate. Oil inks are applied with various tools, including traditional paint brushes. The paper is wet as it is run through the press, and finished piece is filled, in part, with surprises, some good and some bad. Working on a plate and then transferring the image to a piece of paper with the help of a master printer is a rewarding way to work.

The feeling one has when a print sparkles from an unintentional gesture or stroke that worked exactly as planned or better and the master printer greets me with - "Oh! you are going to like this" and I do. And then there is the process through which one must travel to decide what to keep, and what to destroy. There is no easy way to decide what is worthy of survival and what must go. But the keep or destroy decision is important to the full appreciation for work ultimately retained.
