Art and literature and mythology have been harsh on the poor goat as a metaphor for the shortcomings of mankind. These noble little beasts have been sacrificed and chased out of town by just about every civilization and culture. So to identify with the lowly goat may call for an explanation.
Goats are survivors, capable of getting by on meager rations. They are individualists who only reluctantly will be herded, but are fearless in their desire to stand their ground. They show a certain affection for people and a complete acceptance for their lot in life. Not one looks like the next.
Goats are but one of coterie of beasts I call on to tell a story or describe a condition. The work that follows is a sample of images I created using pictorial allegory as a vehicle for defining and naming emotions and impressions that only a story and a picture (and a beast) could define for me . They no longer have much to do with being “bewildered”, but do capture a wide range of themes that I could never express without the presence of the “beast”, whether horse, goat, bird, or whatever.
