(in the artist’s own words)
When I was staring my career in the arts, my first one person show at the Rhode Island School of Design Woods-Gerry Gallery consisted of two large rooms of these small abstract collages. At a time in my career when I was looking for a place to plant my feet, these works were really a series of formal exercises meant to experiment with moving forms around “on” a 2-D space and “in” a 3-D space, without getting bogged down with a preponderance of content. Of course, as is always the case, content unconsciously worked its way in these images, because as with all people, meaning lurks in the background whether we perceive it or not.
